Burke Lake Fishing Report- The “Burke Slam” / Mercer Lake Fishing Report

 Early June 2018

“If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago.”- Grey

The post-spawn bite continues to be good.  I hope my quick write-up for Burke and Mercer Lake, each within a stone’s throw of one another, can help you get on them.

Conditions / Fish:   Partly sunny to overcast skies.  Water clarity to 1-3 feet.  Air temps in the 70s to 80s.

I caught what my buddy is calling a Burke Slam – 5 different species on the same trip while fishing for largemouth bass:  4 LMBs, 1 walleye, 1 snakehead, 1 yellow perch, and 1 bluegill (not pictured).  If only I could have replaced the bluegill with a muskie, then that would be an even more amazing day.  For more details on fishing Burke Lake checkout Dennis’ great reports on the forum, http://www.baybass.com/forum/index.php?topic=1310.0.  He goes into all the details!

Mercer Lake turned on recently with 8 LMBs in 2 hours and 2 over 3 lbs.  I have also caught them on the fly rig.

Lures / Technique:  My best luck has come on:

  • 5” senko, dark colors, rigged Texas style on a 3/0 EWG hook – cast to vegetation edges and downed wood.  Good for slowing down.  Use a 1/16 to 1/8 oz bullet weight if you need to get to the bottom faster.
  • Zoom horny toad, bull frog color, rigged Texas style on a 3/0 EWG hook - cast to vegetation edges, over submerged grass, and downed wood.  Reminds me of a using a whopper plopper but doesn’t get hung up as easily.  Good for covering the top of the water column.
  • KVD 1.5 square bill in sexy shad - cast to vegetation edges, over submerged grass, and downed wood.  Good for covering from mid to high in the water column.
  • 6 – 6.5 ft med, fast action rod, 2500 spinning reels with 20 lb braid and a 10 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader.
  • 9 ft, 6 or 8 wt fly rod, 9 ft 5x leader, Rich’s Ultimate Worm Fly, black and blue color.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.  Take a kid fishing!   Would you like to see how Bryan “BayBass” Novotny helped me with a pre-owned Ranger Boat purchase last year?  This is an awesome article!!!!    http://www.baybass.com/forum/index.php?topic=1164.0
